Pre-mRNA splicing is catalyzed by the large ribonucleoprotein spliceosome. Spliceosome assembly is a highly dynamic process in which the complex transitions through a number of intermediates. The family of spliceostatin compounds, initially described as antitumorals, constitutes a very interesting tool for the dynamic study of splicing. Spliceostatins interact with the SF3b complex, which is a component of U2 snRNP and is essential for splicing. Here you can see a complex structure of Spliceostatin E in complex with SF3B core showing the specific binding of the compound to the subunit 1 of SF3B (PDB code: 7OPI)
